fitCNY is a project of the Commission for a Healthy Central New York, a coalition made up of representatives from Syracuse University, SUNY Upstate Medical University, and the county health departments of Cayuga, Cortland, Herkimer, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, Oswego, and Tompkins Counties.

The Commission was formed in 2004 to foster a collaborative effort by community leaders and health service providers to improve the health of residents of Central New York.   In doing so, we aim to achieve the overarching national goals articulated in Healthy People 2010 to increase quality and years of healthy life and eliminate health disparities among individuals and populations.  The Commission serves as the catalyst to an effective “healthy community” coalition by laying the groundwork, initiating and monitoring community activities, measuring health improvements, and generally sustaining the initiative for the long term.

The Commission is concentrating on four health areas: dental health, mental health,  stroke, and obesity/overweight. The fitCNY website is designed to promote healthy weight by posting news about nutrition and exercises resources in the eight counties served by the Commission, along with local and national health information websites. Users are encouraged to notify fitCNY about other resources that should be added to the website.
